Specific course objectives

The main aim of the Course is to study the basic concepts of the numerical methods for PDEs, with a focus on those arising from fluid-dynamics applications.

Course programme

Some or all of the following topics will be studied.

Finite difference methods and finite element methods.
Elliptic problems: the 1D case. Extensions to the multidimensional case.

Finite element methods for advection-diffusion problems.
The 1D case: discrete solution behaviour for advection-dominated problems. Stabilization methods: artificial diffusion and streamline diffusion. Petrov-Galerkin schemes. Extension to the 2D case.

Finite element methods for parabolic problems.
Time discretization using the theta-method. Stability considerations.

Finite element methods for hyperbolic problems.
