Specific course objectives

The course aims to introduce students to the main methods of synthesis of controllers for linear dynamic systems, and multivariable continuous-time and discrete time. The definitions of sensitivity, complementary sensitivity and control sensitivity are generalized to MIMO systems and their characteristics are analyzed by suitably defined performance indices. The course presents the methods of state estimation for deterministic and stochastic systems, with particular emphasis on the Kalman filtering. By discussing several examples of simulation techniques for application prior to significant problems in industrial control.

Course programme

Multivariable systems. Standards, rules induced singular values. Sensitivity functions, complementary sensitivity, sensitivity control. Representations of uncertainty. Analysis of robustness and performance. Linear Quadratic Control Formulation of the problem, algorithms, properties of robustness. State estimation Full and reduced order estimators for deterministic systems. Kalman filter and predictor. LTR procedure for robustness. Predictor linearized and extended. Applications to the estimation of uncertain parameters and diagnostics industry. H2 control, definition, properties, applications.

Course entry requirements

Requires knowledge acquired in core courses of Fundamentals of Control, or alternatively of Automatic Control and Systems Theory. The knowledge of discrete-time systems and elements of digital control are appreciated.

Testing and exams

Two written tests, which will focus respectively on the first and second part of the course, will be conducted. Passing both the written tests equates to passing the exam. Alternatively, a written exam, which will focus on all topics covered during the course, must do.
