Laboratorio di progettazione strutturale B

2009-10 Academic year

Lecturer: Timothy Sullivan

Course name: Laboratorio di progettazione strutturale B
Course code: 064146
Degree course: Ingegneria Civile
Disciplinary field of science: ICAR/09
University credits: CFU 3
Course website: n.d.

Specific course objectives

The course aims to give students the opportunity to undertake the seismic design and analysis of a structure or foundation system, under the supervision of experienced academics.

Course programme

The course offers a series of lectures on a wide range of subjects in the field of earthquake engineering. The lectures are presented by various experts and researchers in the field of earthquake engineering. The lectures cover the following subjects: i) Definition of seismic loads for earthquake engineering, ii)Geotechnical characterisation of sites, iii) Seismic design and analysis considerations for foundation structures, iv) Seismic analysis and design of RC concrete structures, including an introduction to non-linear analysis techniques. v) Strut and tie modelling for RC structures, vi) Seismic design considerations for pre-cast concrete structures, vii) Seismic design and non-linear analysis of masonry structures.

Course entry requirements

Fundamentals of seismic design and analysis. Fundamentals of structural mechanics.

Testing and exams

Students work in small groups on a seismic design project, the details of which are agreed with the course coordinator. Once the design is complete, the students must submit a written report which is then reviewed, and provided it is of acceptable quality, the students then sit an oral exam with questions on various aspects of their work and the fundamentals of seismic design and analysis.
