Specific course objectives

The main objective is to study the electromagnetic aspects of the remote sensing and the diagnostic, using advanced analytical and numerical tools. The students at the end of the course will be able to formulate, analyse and to choose the more suitable analytical and numerical methods and related algorithms to solve the specific application problems of remote sensing and diagnostics.

Course programme

The electromagnetic problem of remote sensing and diagnostics. Basic elements of tensor and dyadic theory and the related operational tools. Electromagnetic scattering and its integral formulation in terms of equivalent sources and the dyadic Green’s function. Electromagnetic inverse scattering: integral formulation; solution uniqueness; ill-posed problems; non-radiating and non-measurable corrents; probabilistic formulation (Markov Field); cost functionals and minimization algorithms (simulating annealing, evolutionary codes and genetic codes; neural networks). Application examples: Ground Penetrating Radar; electromagnetic absorption in human bodies(human head during cellular phone calls).
