Local and metropolitan area networks
The IEEE802 family of standards: Ethernet, Token bus, Token ring, FDDI, DQDB. Bluetooth, WiFi. HiperLAN. Description of protocols, performance comparison. Parameters influencing performance
Traffic control
Definition of congestion. Congestion control strategies. Admission control. Flow control. ARQ protocols
ATM
The cell. Protocol Reference Model. Fast switching architectures. Flow control and traffic classes.
TCP/IP and the Internet
The Internet: network structure, definition of nodes, control bodies. IP protocol: address structure, address classess, classless addressing, subnetting. TCP/UDP: the concept of ports. TCP: flow and congestion control, window dimensioning. Other protocols and their functionalities: ARP, ICMP, RTP. Introducing IPv6. Network security: principles of authentication and ciphering. Mobile radio systems
General description of the structure of a cellular network: evolution of the infrastructure from circuit switched to circuit/packet, to full packet. Radio interface of the most popular systems: GSM-GPRS, UMTS.
