Specific course objectives

The student will gain knowledge of the main technologies regarding wastewater treatment, drinking water treatment, waste treatment/disposal/recovery. Moreover the student will be able to design the basic unit processes.

Course programme

WASTEWATER TREATMENTS
Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of wastewater. Preliminary treatment of municipal wastewater (screening, grit and oil removal,...), sedimentation (technologies, design, application). Conventional biological processes (aerobic suspended-growth) to remove organic matter (application and design). Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by biological and chemical methods(description and application). Sludge treatments: thickening, stabilization, dewatering and heat drying (system types and application). Overview of wastewater legislation and regulation.

DRINKING WATER TREATMENTS
Conventional drinking water treatments. System types for groundwater and surface water (specific pollutants removal techniques and application).

WASTE TREATMENTS
Solid waste management and recovery legislation. Collect/selection techniques of municipal solid wastes. RDF production plant, composting (technologies and application).Waste incineration (technologies, application and gaseous emissions treatment). Landfill (design, percolate characterization, biogas captation systems, management analysis during the landfill's active operation and post-closure stages).
