Architecture and Architectural composition 4

2010-11 Academic year

Lecturer: Tiziano Cattaneo   Christian Ramponi

Course name: Architecture and Architectural composition 4
Course code: 501014
Degree course: Ingegneria Edile-Architettura
Disciplinary field of science: ICAR/14
University credits: CFU 9
Course website: n.d.

Specific course objectives

The class is configured as a planning advanced course directed to last year’s students. About method, there will be a continuous interaction between particular kind considerations on project’s theme and considerations about architectural and urban composition general themes.

Course programme

The three-stepped planning work starts at the same time of the theoretical course’s part and can be developed individually or by maximum two students groups. Planning work concerns the urban and architectural composition project of a complex area, deepening the role of environmental, morphological and infrastructural systems in the architectural planning process. The work is developed on an area assigned by the teacher.

Syllabus
The three-stepped planning work starts at the same time of the theoretical course’s part and can be developed individually or by maximum two students groups. Planning work concerns the urban and architectural composition project of a complex area, deepening the role of environmental, morphological and infrastructural systems in the architectural planning process. The work is developed on an area assigned by the teacher.

Phase A
The planning area is placed through the analysis of its history (urban, architectural and constructive), of its present morphological and typological conditions, of its functional, symbolic and socio-cultural requirements. At this step’s end a report with context’ illustrative designs in 1:1000 or 1:500 scale.

Phase B
Phase B Through the definition of spaces use, a first lay-out is supposed and functions and their distribution principles are defined in detail. Moreover, measures (mq and mc), existing bonds and possible other projects having faced that area or tightly attached areas are verified. During this step, a first planning “idea” is expressed, for which it’s necessary: i) a working plastic model especially useful to verify volumetric relations that are instituted with the context; ii) the plani-volumetric project editing aimed to refine compositional process’ first step; the urban and landscapes sections’ editing-requested scales 1:500 and 1:200

Phase C
The last step can be faced only by student having obtained a good valuation in step B. This step requires the development of a preliminary plan, equipped with plants and sections suitable to describe it, also concerning static and systemic features, and the development of graphic works allowing its valuation from a compositional point of view, comprehensive of materials and colours choices. For the final valuation, project’s boards must be supported by report of step A and by a synthetic portraying of the planning lines individuation process of step B. Precondition for test‘s development is works’ delivery on computer support (on CD .pdf or .jpg -300dpi resolution). What submitted at the end of step C can be the base for the final processing of the Degree Thesis.

Suggested reading materials

Due to its nature and definition, course’s activity is strongly centred on students practicality, however supported and helped by the teachers. Therefore suggested training aid configures as theoretical deepening of themes that will be developed in students planning activity.
