Specific course objectives
The course has the aim to provide a description of the fundamental characteristics of audio and video signals and of the digitalization, compression and transmission techniques. At the end of the course, the student will be able to master the most common coding standards and of the algorithms at their fundations

Sampling theorem and its extension to 2D and (2D+t)
Quantization and rate/distortion
Basic concepts of source coding; entropy of a source
Redundancy, entropy (lossless) coding, perceptual (lossy) coding
System characterization voice/ears, image/vision
Transform coding and perceptual quantization of coefficients
Linear systems basics (filters, estimation techniques)
Differential and predictive systems DPCM, ADPCM, Delta, Block Matching, Optical Flow
