Specific course objectives
The student will gain knowledge of the main wastewater advanced processes, treatment of contaminated sites and mass/energy recovery from wastes.
Course programme
TREATMENT AND REUSE OF WASTEWATER
Legislation. Characteristics of wastewater. Overview of the main treatment processes. Reuse of treated wastewater. Industrial and agricultural reuse. Advanced technologies for wastewater disinfection.
TREATMENT OF CONTAMINATED SITES
Legislation. Characterization, treatment and management of contaminated sites.
MASS AND ENERGY RECOVERY FROM WASTE
Legislation. Mass recovery from: organic, construction & demolition (C&D) and cellulosic wastes, contaminated sites, incineration residues. Energy recovery from waste.
MUNICIPAL SLUDGE REUSE
Overview of the main sludge treatments. Legislation. Agricultural reuse. Heat drying.
Course entry requirements
Water and wastewater treatment plants. Basic knowledge regarding wastewater, drinking water and waste clean up processes.
