Specific course objectives

The course illustrates the architecture of enterprise information systems that support management operations and business intelligence. For this purpose, typical cases of enterprise information systems are illustrated and discussed. The course teaches also a modeling methodology of functional requirements that covers business processes, data, interfaces, uses cases.

Course programme

Enterprise information systems are software applications that are designed to process information of organizations. Lectures illustrates the architecture of main classes of information systems such as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) CRM (Customer Relationship Management) BI (Business Intelligence). Exercise sessions teach requirements analysis methodology.

Information Systems Architecture

  • The architectural framework of Information Systems (a) IT architecture; (b)Functional architecture; (c)Organizational architecture
  • ERP systems: overall paradigm and architecture
  • CRM systems: overall architecture, contact systems and contact centers, Sale Force Automation, Field Force Automation, Marketing and Analysis Systems
  • Government Systems: e-Government systems e-Democracy
  • Health Care Systems
  • Business Intelligence systems

Information Requirements Analysis

  • Foundations: (a) What is modeling? (b) Modeling levels (conceptual, logical, physical) (c) Modeling domains: processes, information, interface ; the requirements analysis roadmap
  • Information modeling (a) Business architecture level with SIRE (strategic information requirements elicitation) (b) Conceptual with ER (c) Transition to Relational Model
  • Process modeling: (a) Business architecture level : Structure chart and Flow (b) Use Case modeling
  • Interface modeling: (a) Business architecture level with GOA (Goal Oriented Analysis); Transition to logical modeling with Webml
  • Modeling of analytical information: DFM (Dimensional Fact Model); OLAP e relational local models

Course entry requirements

Data base modelling concepts, specifically ER (tought in Database courses) are prerequisites.

Testing and exams

Student teams perform an assignment of requirements analysis of a module of an enterprise information system. At the examination session the student defends his assignment and discusses also conceptual foundations. The mark sums (1) team assignment (2) assignment defense (3) oral explanation of conceptual foundations. Students who cannot participate to the team assignment will go through a written exercise and an oral discussion.
