Specific course objectives

The course provides the basis for an understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects connected to the creation of on-line and off-line multimedia content, allowing the student to make the right choices in different contexts.

Course programme

The World Wide Web
HTML language, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), XML metalanguage, purpose-specific languages (SMIL, SVG, …), programming languages for the Web, client-side interaction (JavaScript, Java, Flash, …), server-side interaction (CGI programs, application servers, …), elements of Web styling, Usability, Accessibility, Information Architecture.

On-line/off-line multimedia content

• Images and graphics: color models, bitmap graphics (global/local processing, tools, …), vector graphics (objects, groups, tools, …), graphic formats (characteristics, use), graphics for the Web (requirements, tools)
• Digital audio: characteristics, formats, use
• Digital animation: bitmap animations and vector animations (animated GIFs, Flash movies, …)
• Digital video: formats, non-linear video/audio editing, requirements for the Web

Advanced forms of multimedia interaction
Elements of virtual reality (immersive/non-immersive), augmented reality, telepresence, perceptual interfaces, applications.

Course entry requirements

Essential programming skills and basic knowledge of Internet architecture.
