Extracts from the Diary of our College:

August 1954 - May 1955

2nd August. An unusual beginning. This first morning we get into troubles and find it difficult to be in time for the lessons. A heavy rain beats us on the way...
At the College we meet with many old friends... Greetings and smiles and... plenty of work for the two Wardens, for the Brothers of the book-shop and even for Mr. Fouad who for the occasion has even dressed in a new "Jallabya". His new bar seems well equipped...
Old boys are familiar with the classrooms and even the serious faces of some teachers do not frighten them. But many new comers show an air of too much goodness. Wait and see: expecially in 1st Secondary.
Some changes have taken place in the College Staff. Our dear Fr. Peter Foletto has left for good; he has been given a job in England - Fr. Corbetta, Vice Warden of the Secondary Courses, is now in Kadugli - Fr. Frison, Warden of the Primary Courses, is now busy opening a new school in El Nahud. Far away in Bahr El Ghazal Fr. Bianchi of the Boarding House, is studying the Dinka language. - Mr. Bishai and Mr. Abdu have left us too. May God reward them all for the good work done amongst us.
Welcome to Rev. Father Dominic Valmaggia as Vice Warden in the Primary, to Rev. Fr. Mosciatti and to Rev. Fr. Pigarella. While the first two are fresh from Europe, the third is back from the hard experience of Dilling! Cheers to them while the train of school and study is off on its long journey of nine months. September 1954. The Right Rev. Fr. Antonio Todesco, Superior General of the Verona Fathers (the official name of our Teachers, Fathers and Brothers), spends few days with us. We are very pleased to see him friendly talking with students and interested in our games.
October 1954. The first report cards - While a good number of Students are happily going home with them, others
show a serious face. Coming into class they salute their teachers with gloomy "Good morning". But the teachers with their usual solemnity - plough on... l0th October. Comboni Day: There is some fun in our ground; the Fair. Many Students, expecially the youngsters think to find the field of miracles as Pinocchio. One after the other all the piasters are vanishing and in front of the various tables you can see penniless creatures... some are showing their small gains, but the majority go home hopefully looking forward to the Christmas fair.
This evening our Cinema is packed: "The miracle of Fatima" is on - So striking is the Film that some leap over the wall to see it a second time. Were they day boys or boarders?
November 1954. The Rev. Fr. James Xillo is flying to Juba where he will be Procurator to the Equatorial Mission. Much gratitude, for the work he has done in this College first as Warden of the Boarding House and lately as Treasurer of the College and manager of our Cinema.
Oxford Exams. From the way the Candidates are looking, one can understand the struggle they are enduring. We all
wish them good luck and pray God to help them.
8th December. Feast of the Immaculate Conception. All the christian pupils take active part in the services held in honour of Our Lady - The final procession at the Cathedral was a real triumph - When his Lordship Bishop Baroni read the consacration to Her Immaculate Heart, we felt that he was really speaking on behalf of us all.
13th December
. Half term exams:
Long hours of troublesome work (who invented the exams?) with so many invigilators! The Wardens' threats to the cribbers are like atom explosions indeed. To-day being the feast of Saint Lucy, some ask Her to pour on our Teachers a shower of gifts, and particularly the one that "blesseth him that gives and him that takes". (Shakespeare "On mercy").
25th December Christmas. "Glory to God on high and peace on earth to men of good will ».
It is the Feast. In the Church and in the club, at home and in the Boarding House one cannot miss this wonderful atmosphere of joy and happiness. Some friends from Italy have sent an enormous Alemagna Panettone. Thanks.
During these short holidays our shaky and outmoded Busses are panting towards well known places such as Gebel Aulya, Wadi Saydna, Kadaro, etc... and one always enjoys a substantious breakfast at Gordon Tree... and Gyref. But in the history book of a certain Boarding House is narrated how certain Students (all over 16 years) fond of hiking, were seen walking home in the afternoon from Gordon Tree... but the blame must be laid entirely on the Busses; they were too impatient, and quick on their way home...
1955 - Happy new year.
2nd January. Without useless delay the College opens for the second term. The silver Jubilee is at hand and the Wardens and Sportmaster want our Display well prepared: A special praise and thanks to the Students who have actively cooperated with them.
Moreover we hear that the Sisters School Girl will take part... Competition is always a good incentive!
9th to l3th January. We are pleased to see many visitors from different Countries. His Grace Archbishop Knox is representing the Pope at the first Catholic Action National Convention. Bishop and Delegates from all over the Sudan meet in our Hall for lectures and discussions. The Sudanese Government is officially represented by the Minister of Social Affairs.
February-Maxch 1955. The preparation for the final exams is usually keeping pace with the weather... the atmosphere is warming up and nerves responding unsympathetically. There are some students who seem to enjoy reading magazines and Pinocchio rather than text-books.
But he laughs best who laughs last! The Warden's Radio broadcasts that swarms of bees are on their way towards the College determined to sting mercilessly "the lazy yawning drones". (Shakespeare).
Easter 1955. Five members of the Staff this morning leave for a well deserved rest in Italy - At the station we see them off wishing them a happy return next August.
The last days of the Holy Week were spend in study and prayer - Being the Exams so close even. Mr. Pag... and Company set down to work, at last! Many people attending the great services at the Cathedral were pleased to see our Altar-boys devoutly performing their duties.
EXAMS. l2th April. The Hall, the theater, the verandah are now our battlefield - The severe faces of the invigilators do not prevent some College Dandies from taking it easy.
But the majority is seriously at work. With the thermometer at 108 F. it is not a particularly pleasant job to set all these blessed papers properly - Was it a good omen the little unusual shower we got just at the end of our scholastic year? Let us hope so; and may our good Lord help us all.
5th May - Distribution of final Reports. What a man sows he shall also reap.
Happy faces and joyful hearts can easily be seen to day in the College. It is the natural result of hard work: Let us hope that the successful Students will say at least a word of Thanks to God, to their parents, and tutors and their teachers as well...
When a Student has learned the value of gratitude he has advanced deeply towards the great aim of education. But any visitor to day can see quite a number of disappointed pupils Some met with bad luck; but most of them must remember that Comboni College is neither the refuge of idle or backward pupils nor a school where youngmen can afford doing what they like. The good standard of the College must not be lowered, and its motto

ALWAYS MORE AND ALWAYS BETTER
must be a glorious and lasting heritage.

55ann48.JPG (453953 bytes)  Spiritual activities

In the leading article it has been hinted how the College Staff is deeply concerned with the moulding of Students character.
This is proved by the various religious activities to which the fathers gave much of their enthusiasm.
To the Christian boys is given a chance to attend holy Mass daily. They take part in the two services on Sunday.
It is a consoling sight the gathering of all Christian boys for both the First Fridays and Holy Stations of the Cross in Lent.
The Marian year has given to many of them a chance to honour Our Lady; the Legion of Mary continued its good work.
We are pleased to thank the boys of the Glee Club of Fr. Joseph. In many occasions they did sing so well in our church that we easily forget the extra-zeal in striking the eight bells!

ALWAYS MORE AND ALWAYS BETTER.

Sports

It has been written that Sports of all kind hold a very important place in the program of any school. Not only do they develop strong bodies but also they aid very much in developing strong characters.
This statement confirms the old latin: "Mens sana, in corpore sano"(A healthy mind in a healthy body).
Therefore the Students of fine character do appreciate the effort of the College in general and of the Sportsmaster in particular for an energetic Physical Training and a lively participation to all sports activities.

Boarding House 1954-1955

Sometimets it is a pleasure to recall the days that have gone: it is to bring back the difficulties we met and the victories we achieved.
We began with 136 boys, divided into the unforgettable three groups. To the Rev. Fr. Boffelli was given the hard job to nurse the 45 pugnacious kids of the first group. A typical and relentless spirit of competition kindled the lively flame of both school and sport activities. They all strove for the first places in their classes as well as the playground. Here are the names of the most successful guys: Izzat Dawlatly, George Dawlatly and George Fawat the customary first comers of 2nd and 3rd Primary. El Fatih Osman, Abdel Moneim Ahmed Fadeel and Omar Siddik El Mahdi closely followed. It is a credit to this Group that only three out of our 45 kids failed in the final exams, and just a couple of them were contented now and then with the last place: and even this

is a sort of distinction. The leading team in sports was the one headed by Mahmoud Ahmed Fadeel; next was that of Abdel Moneim Ahmed Fadeel: the competitions have always been spectacular, with shouting, dust storms and even bitter tears from the losers. It is a fact that the Sudanese are tough sockers, and among them the boys from El Doueim are the toughest.

Here are a few celebrities of the Group (you won't forget them): Antoun Agia, Mohammad Hassan Mohd., Abou Ali, and Salah Mohd. Osman who ranks 136th from Joseph Look, the taller.

The Second Group, 44 scamps from 3rd, 4th Primary and lst Secondary, had a first go with Rev. Fr. Brambilla, who mastered with praiseworthy skill this flock which is (it is not a discovery) the more turbulent of the B. H. In November Fr. Brambilla was appointed to a higher post and his successor, Rev. Fr. Gasparini, worked with this Group only two months; just before Christmas Rev. Fr. Pierantoni took up the reins. The Group activities sailed on smoothly; in school the best corers were Joseph Hermez, Kamal Mohammad Osman, Raymond Zakher. In sports the new team of Cadets displayed lively games (even too lively sometimes): it is the field from which we will pick up the champions of the elder team of Boarders.

And here again a few celebrities of the Group not to be forotten: as Michel Pagoulatos, Louis Joannidis, Winder Buth, and ohammad Moudhish.

The 3rd Group, numbering 47 experienced (and duly shaved) young men was ruled by Rev. Fr. De Bertolis.

All Group activities were regulated by the Group Council, which was summoned weekly at the Warden's office. This Council was firmly and solemnly presided over by Master Moustapha Mohd. Bashar, from Atbara. He was assisted by other not less famous ones as Cleto Hassan Ryal (Wau), representative of the House of Kitchener, Ahmed Taha Nazer (Jeddah), representative of the House of Gordon, Garabed Semerdjian (Gedaref), representative of the Boarders' Team, Joseph Baladi (El Nahoud), treasurer and representative of the Referees, and Nicholas Vallianatos (Addis Abeba) sepresentative of the extra-sporting activities. We are pleased to remark that the good work of this council led to a better understanding between boys and assistants and infused in the former a greater sense of responsibility.

As for profit in class, here are the outstanding names: Cleto H. Ryal (4th Sec.) and Henry Brahimsha (2nd Sec.) who always came first; next you have Derham Noaman, Joseph Look, Taki Toulba, Osman Hassan El Iman.

Our Boarders Team fought spectacular matches and won splendid victories. They reaped their laurels during the tournament at Atbara on Christmas. Nobody could stand their overwhelming enthusiasm: seven men of six nationalities, but one soul.

The active contributors to the monthly Diary of the B. H. deserve an honourable mention: they helped mates to point out that the boarders' life is everything but a dull one.

And here again our Group celebrities: Mohammed Abdou Mohammed, Franco Dal Re, Yassin Saleh Salah, Joe Look who had to bow all the doors he had to pass through, and Antoun Hebberieh the heroic buffet-keeper, with Andrea Magliolo and Omar Hilmi.

So through the discipline of school and sports we endeavoured to enrich the minds, and to mould the characters of tomorrow.

Fr. De Bertolis
